By Michael Williams (2/14/2007)
Barry will make $10 million in the 2007 season pitching for the San Francisco Giants. He will then receive a raise of $4 million in each of the next two seasons.
Zito is a star left hander and is a former AL Cy Young Award winner. He has signed a seven year contract with San Francisco worth $126 million. This is the largest contract ever signed by a pitcher. The contract includes an $18 million club option in 2014 and $7 million buyout.
Zito will be joining Barry Bonds as the face of the Giants this season. The Giants already have extremely talented pitchers and Zito would be the star amongst them. Zito will replace Jason Schmidt who has joined the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Zito was the recipient of the 2002 AL Cy Young Award and he spent his first seven big league season playing for Oakland Athletics. He has never missed a start in his career and with his induction into the Giants, the team hopes to be in contention for the NL West. The Giants missed the playoffs for the third consecutive time last season.
Zito, who is 28 years old, was represented by Scott Boras. Boras is considered to be a superagent. In 2008, Zito will make $14.4 million. While he will make $18.5 million in 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively. He will receive $19 million in 2012 and $20 million in 2013. Zito has a full no trade clause in his agreement.
Zito’s option will be guaranteed if he pitches 600 innings between 2011 and 2013, 400 innings from 2012 to 2013 or 200 inning in 2013 and 180 innings in either 2011 or 2012. If his option becomes guaranteed then Zito can avoid the contract and receive a $3.5 million buyout.
He is slated to earn $500,000 in bonus for winning the Cy Young Award. He will receive $200,000 if he finishes second in voting, $150,000 for finishing third, $100,000 for the fourth place and $50,000 for coming fifth. If he wins a second time, he will receive a bonus of $750,000 and $1 million if he wins the award a third time or more.
Besides these bonuses, Zito will receive $250,000 for MVP, $150,000 for a second place, $100,000 for coming in third, $75,000 for the fourth place and $50,000 for coming fifth. If he is named World Series MVP, he will receive $200,000 and an NCLS MVP would earn him $100,000. If he gets the Gold Glove, he will receive $100,000 and another $100,00 for becoming an All Star.
