Zig Zag
Definition
The term zig zag in the sports betting industry is commonly used during the playoffs. More specifically, the zig zag theory is often used in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The theory states that a zig zag pattern will exist during a given playoff series—in that after a team loses, they will bounce back and win their next game.
In practice
The NBA playoffs is a great time to make some serious money. There are several trends that the astute handicapper can follow, and consistently beat the sportsbooks. One of the main angles that is in use is the zig zag theory. Specifically, teams will zig zag wins and loses (both against the spread (ATS) and straight up (SU) during a playoff series. A more in depth analysis reveals why this angle works—unlike the other major sports of football, baseball, and hockey, the sport of basketball affords teams great adjustments during the playoffs. Coaching becomes an integral part in the playoffs—for with a solid coaching staff, a team will have great success and will advance in the playoffs deeper than other teams with lesser quality coaches.
How to play
The zig zag theory is pretty simple in practice. Basically, the sports gambler simply backs the team who previously lost its last game. Every game in the playoffs count, so losing two in a row against any opponent is very detrimental to a team’s chances of advancing—thus, winning becomes an utmost priority. Teams will do anything to ensure and get the win (a great motivational factor). An especially strong zig zag occurs when the home team loses its first game. Since the home team usually hosts the first two games of a series, it must at least ensure that it wins one of the games, lest such a team goes on the road 0-2. Teams play in major desperation mode and will play to their potential. Another strong zig zag angle occurs for the road team. If the road team loses its first two games on the road and is now returning home, a strong play will be warranted for such a team. This team has already “zigged twice” and will now have to zag.
Caution
Although this theory has been rather successful over the years, Las Vegas oddsmakers have been taken this into account when they devise their lines. It has been the experience of the author that the zig zag theory can no longer be played alone. Lines are becoming more skewed and as such, the sports gambler must use this angle in conjuction with others for long term success.
Summary
The zig zag theory basically states to go for the team that previously lost its last game. It is usually used during the NBA playoffs.
