Yankees Offer Bernie Williams A Non-roster Invite
By Michael Williams (3/2/2007)
Bernie Williams must be pondering over what to do with his career. He had been offering an invitation by the Yankees to the Spring Training but it is a non-guaranteed and non-roster invitation. This was not something Williams bargained for but indications are there that he might be actually considering this proposal.
However, Williams has two more options in front of him. One is that he might retire from baseball and other, which is far more attractive, he might sign a better deal with another team. The last option, however, looks very doubtful at the moment because William considers himself to be only a Yankee.
At the moment, Williams is on crossroads. He does not know what to do. If he joins the Spring Training, he would end up making more news than returning hero Andy Pettitte. While, if he decides to retire from baseball, he might regret making that decision too soon.
The Yankees at the moment have 12 pitchers and 3 first basemen on their roster but Williams cannot be counted out if he attends the camp. It is well known that Joe Torre, Yankees’ manager, has long been a Williams fan. Though Torre’s clout is diminishing in the Yankees, he can still sway opinions.
Williams could have got a guaranteed roster invitation to the Spring Training if the Yankees had continued giving Jason Giambi time at first base and Andy Phillips had been ready to play first base full time. However, Phillips was a disappointment in his first full season, prompting the Yankees to sign up Doug Mientkiewicz. While Giambi makes a good DH as a first baseman.
What Yankees have to realize is that Williams is still quite good on the field. There might still be a chance for Williams if he takes up the offer as the Yankees might be too embarrassed to cut him off the team or they might just wake up and realize the value Williams can add to the team. For the moment, it is a waiting game.
