Yankees Now Offer Bernie Williams A Minor League Contract
By Michael Williams (3/2/2007)
Now the Yankees have gone one step ahead and offered Bernie Williams a minor league contract and an invitation to Spring Training. This piece of information was disclosed by a baseball official on condition of anonymity as the Yankees did not want to make the the offer public as yet.
Williams is 38 years old and has been playing for the Yankees since 1991. Earlier, Williams had said that he wanted to continue with the Yankees but at the moment it looks like the Yankees do not have a stop for Williams on the roster. Yankees at the moment have 12 pitchers and have made Jason Giambi a designate hitter, leaving no room for Williams. Lat year, Johnny Damon took Williams position as the starter in center while Melky Cabrera is scheduled to be the fourth outfielder.
Last season when Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield were injured, Williams filled in for them and played quite well averaging .281 with 12 homeruns and 16 RBIs. Joe Torre, Yankees manager, is a great admirer of Williams and his baseball ability. He would be the person to swing opinion in Williams favor during the Spring Training if Williams decides to take up the offer.
However, Williams has not got back to the Yankees on the offer. Scott Boras, Williams’ agent, said that he was waiting to hear from Williams about the offer dealt out by the Yankees.
Though, there are doubts whether Williams will take up Yankees offer. Recently in an interview Williams had said that he had other interests in life which were as important as baseball. He further added that he had reconciled to the fact that his playing days might be over no matter what he thought.
