Vikings Hire Colts’ Frazier As Defensive Coordinator

By Michael Williams (3/6/2007)

Leslie Frazier, special assistant to coach Tony Dungy, has left Indianapolis Colts to join Minnesota Vikings. He is the first assistant to leave the Colts after the Super Bowl victory. He was earlier in-charge of the defense with the Colts and he will be Vikings’ defensive coordinator. He will be working along with other members in the staff of Brad Childress, who is Vikings’ head coach.

Earlier, Frazier was under coach Marvin Lewis and worked as the defensive coordinator for Cincinnati Bengals during 2003-2004. Frazier was fired after Bengals had a problem stopping the run and preventing big gains. Frazier is of the opinion that Lewis was himself a defense coordinator and Frazier could not make certain decisions as a result.

Childress personally feels that when the team hires an expert, he should be allowed to do his work. He added if the coach kept interrupting then it was bound to spell disaster for a team. The pass defense is the weakest point in Vikings’ game and opponents have known to exploit that weakness.

Frazier played in the professional league as a cornerback for Chicago Bears from 1981 to 1986. But after an injury during a Super Bowl match, his professional career was over. It was then he decided to take up coaching. Frazier was one the key contributors in guiding Colts to their first ever Super Bowl victory after they relocated from Baltimore in 1980s.

Frazier says that his next goal would be to improve Vikings’ defense. He is confident about his abilities and so are his new team and coach.
