The Supplemental Draft
By Michael Williams (8/16/2006)
Before each football season starts there is
the traditional National Football League (NFL) Draft, then this is followed by a
Supplemental Draft.
This Supplemental Draft is designed to allow for those who didn’t petition the
NFL for early entry, called underclassmen, and are ineligible for an upcoming
college season. Basically the Supplemental Draft has become a way for players to
enter into the NFL.
To determine the order of the Supplemental Draft the league uses a three-step
system that is semi-lottery. The first lottery is for teams with six wins or
less so they can get the top picks. The teams with the worst record from the
previous season are given an advantage over the other teams with the amount of
advantage being decreased as the draft moves down the line. The teams with the
best records from the previous year get the least advantage and pick last.
The second step is for teams that didn’t make the playoffs and they once again
follow the same lottery system as shown above. The team with the worst record
from the previous season selects first and on down the line from there.
The third step in the Supplemental Draft system involves the twelve teams that
made the playoffs in the previous season and as with the first two steps they
follow the same lottery pattern with the worst team going first on down to the
best.
Once the selection order is determined by the league each team can then submit
the name of the player or players they are interested in and the order they
would like to select them in. The rights to the player is awarded to the team
with the highest bid. If the amounts are the same then the team that is highest
on the selection order wins the players rights.
