The Ins And Outs On MLB Odds
By Michael Williams (7/25/2006)
Although many people love betting on MLB, there
are a ton of regular gamblers that have no idea how
MLB odds work. They are quite different than the odds for NBA,
NFL, or other major league sports odds. In fact, many people will choose not to
bet on baseball at all since the odds are a little difficult to understand.
The deal with MLB odds is that there is no point spread. You simply bet the
money lines. You can find the money lines by looking for the negative or
positive numbers. If the odds are negative (-145, -175, etc.) then it means you
have to bet if you want to win $100. If the odds are positive (+155, +180, etc.)
then it means these are the underdogs and if you wager $100 you will likely win.
In addition to these money lines, there are often run lines in MLB
baseball odds. You can find these looking as a number in the
positive or a number in the negative (+1.5 or -1.5). When you are looking at the
run lines, you should note that a positive means a favorite needs to win by more
than a run. With the negative, an underdog has to stay within a run of the
favorite in order for the gambler to win on the bet.
As you can see, these odds make it a little difficult to win at betting on MLB.
Although you don’t really need to know a whole lot about the MLB to bet, you
really have to get pretty lucky most of the time since baseball games can really
go both ways in many cases.
