Tennessee Titans Release Travis Henry To Avoid Paying Bonus
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
After negotiations between Tennessee Titans and Travis Henry failed to rework the contract, the Titans released Henry. The contract contained a bonus of $8.3 million. This also prompted Henry to fly to Denver to start a dialogue with the Broncos.
A team spokesman said that he could neither confirm nor deny the report that Henry had been released. Henry’s agent, Hadley Engelhard, Mike Reinfeldt, Titans’ general manager, and coach Jeff Fisher were not available for comments.
However, it is known that Henry’s agent and the Titans had been having several discussions in the last few days to negotiate and rework the bonus into a longer contract. Before the report of Henry’s release started circulating, Reinfeldt had said that it might be a good idea if Henry started checking the football market out.
In 2006, Henry was instrumental in reviving his career along with the Titans’ rushing offense by running for 1,211 yards and having 7 touchdowns. This was the best performance since 2000 by a Titans’ running back.
Henry has been playing professional football for the last six years and he got the starting job by the fifth game of the season by beating out Chris Brown. Last season he finished fifth in the AFC in rushing and he became the 100th player in the history of NFL to reach 5,000 yards in rushing in December 2006.
Along with Vince Young, Henry helped the Titans to finish fifth in the NFL in rushing offense. The two averaged 156.3 yards per game and helped the Titans win 8 of their last 11 games.
