Suns Lose To Sixers And Lose First Game To Eastern Conference Team
By Kris Lazaro (5/8/2007)
The Phoenix Suns lost on the road for the first time to an Eastern Conference team. The Suns won their first 14 road games against the East teams and were aspiring to become the first team ever to win all its road games against the opposing conference. However, Philadelphia 76ers had a different take altogether. Andre Iguodala scored 24 points while Willie Green scored 20 points to ensure that the Sixers won 99-94. The Suns has the lead but failed to hold on to it and this is the first time it has happened.
For the Sixers it was a reprieve. They have had a very bad season and this win will help them salvage some pride. The Suns were playing without Shawn Marion and Boris Diaw. This was the first game that Marion was sitting out of because he had bruised his right hand and left quadriceps that he suffered in the previous game when the Suns played Indiana. Diaw was left out because of back spasms.
For the Suns Amare Stoudemire scored 31 points with 14 rebounds while Steve Nash scored 23 points. With this one loss, the Suns ended up matching the only other team with single road game loss against the opposing conference and that team was the 1982-83 Sixers. That Sixers team went on to win the NBA championship and the star point guard of that team was Maurice Cheeks, current Sixers coach.
The Sixers actually played the game more like the Suns and they ended up surprising the Suns by notching up their highest scoring quarters of the season with 35 points in the first quarter. There is no doubt that the Suns do not have the tight defense but their offense is very fond of scoring in bunches and sometimes rallies, which have been the nemesis of most teams.
This time it was not to be and with this game the Suns perfect road games against the East conference came to an end and that is that.
