Styles of Play (Basketball)
By Kris Lazaro (5/4/2007)
This article will deal mostly with the different styles of play in basketball (both college and professional). The sports gambler has to know the style of play, for if one does not know, one may not be able to fully handicap such a team’s tendencies.
In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, there is a old adage that says to take into consideration who is officiating a particular game. If a refereeing squad comes from a conference where aggressive play is not tolerated, it is best to fade the more aggressive team in the contest. Although this information is released only minutes before a game, it is yet a very valuable piece of information. For example, if an officiating crew from the Pac-10 is overlooking a game feature a Big East school (like Uconn) and the Big West (like Utah), then Uconn will more than likely be in foul trouble early—thus making the Uconn bet against the spread a dangerous bet.
In the NBA (national basketball association), the tendency of winning teams nowadays is to play fast—like the Phoenix Suns. Since the rule change regarding touch fouls came into effect a few years back, less and less teams are playing physical basketball (for example, Detroit Pistons-style basketball). Such teams are now getting into foul trouble early, thus, playing this way is becoming less and less prevalent and more and more obsolete. The commissioner decided to change the rules of the game to help the game become for flashy; meanwhile, it has now favored run and gun teams like the high flying Suns and other such teams.
High flying, offensive teams usually are good bets for the overs. Such teams usually feature a weak defense and a strong offensive front. But, bettor beware, though, such over under lines will be inflated for the over. It is, then, up to the sports bettor to isolate situations that will still yield overs even if the line is overly inflated. The opposite holds for lower scoring teams.
In closing, learning how different teams play basketball will enable one to fully comprehend and handicap the different situations and conditions present in any given matchup.
