Sixers Learning What Joe Smith Is Worth
By Kris Lazaro (5/8/2007)
76ers have to start thinking about resigning their 6 foot 9 forward, Joe Smith. Smith is in his 12th NBA season and can still run without any problems and play off the bench with ease. Smith can either play for short periods or long ones and has no problems taking on any role.
However, for the Sixers is might be a little too early to make any decisions. They already 12 players on their roster, with a core group of players being led by Andre Iguodala. Sixers’ front office has the rights to make 3 first round picks and one second round pick in the June draft. This is going to tough decision for any team since they will be able to pick high school players who were ineligible last year after the NBA increased the minimum draft age.
Smith was got from a trade with the Denver Nuggets in lieu of Allen Iverson in December. He has had a good effect on the team not only in the locker room but also on court. He is presently averaging 8.1 points with 5.8 rebounds from 31 games. Sixers will have the youngest group of players next season and Smith will be looked upon to have a stabilizing effect on them.
Smith has a career average of 12.4 points with 7.1 rebounds. He started this season with the Denver Nuggets before being included in the Iverson deal. This was done because his contract of $6.8 million was expiring. However, it is a known fact that the Sixers would not be able to offer him a new contract worth as much as his contract with the Nuggets.
Smith had said that he was looking for stability in his life and wanted settle down somewhere but at the moment he is not looking to change his team. One never know what might result. Maybe the Sixers would finally realize his value and resign him for what he is worth.
