Shea Dismissed From Chiefs
By Michael Williams (2/7/2007)
Herm Edwards, Chiefs coach, fired quarterbacks aide Terry Shea which is seen as a sign of major overhaul in the team’s offensive design.
The 60 year old Shea had very strong ties with Dick Vermeil, the former coach of Chiefs, and was a devotee of Al Saunders the one time offensive coordinator. It is common knowledge that Herm Edwards wants to move in a different direction and make away with the offense which the former staff of Chiefs operated. So, the firing of Terry Shea does not come as a major surprise to many.
Herm Edwards is known to be a staunch supporter of coordinator Mike Solari. Solari was Chiefs offensive line coach before being promoted as a coordinator in 2006. It is believed that Chiefs offense is likely to become even more power based. Edwards wants to continue running the ball with tailback Larry Johnson who is the centerpiece of attack. However, it is also known that Edwards wants to be more aggressive throwing vertically.
Terry Shea has been a developer of quarterbacks at college level for a long time. Shea joined Chiefs in 2001 under Vermeil. However, he left Chiefs in 2004 to join Chicago Bears as the offensive coordinator; but he was fired after one season. Shea returned to Chiefs in 2005. Besides NFL, Shea has college background and served as the head coach for San Jose State from 1990 to 1991 and Rutgers from 1996 to 2000.
When Vermeil retired in 2006 and Herm Edwards replaced him, Shea was one of the several assistants who were retained.

There is a lot of speculation going on about the status of Trent Green after the dismissal of Terry Shea. Green has missed half a year due to a severe head injury which he sustained in the beginning of the season. Green and Shea are close friends both on and off the field. Herm Edwards has indicated that 36 year old Trent Green will return as the starter in 2007
