Selig May Not Be Present In Ballpark To See Bond Surpass Aarons Record
By Michael Williams (2/28/2007)
Barry Bonds is all set to break Hank Aaron’s homerun record. However, he should not be expecting to shake hands with commissioner Bud Selig, who might congratulate him over a telephone call.
Selig has not confirmed whether he would be attending any games that the Giants play when Bonds nears Hank Aaron’s record. However, Selig did say that MLB would celebrate Bonds achievement just the same way MLB does with any other major achievement.
Last year, when Trevor Hoffman became the leader in career saves, Selig called him and congratulated him.
Selig pointed out that he did not attend the game where Roger Clemens won his 300th game and he would not decide about Bonds now but sometime in future depending upon how things got.
When asked whether he wanted Bonds to break Aaron’s 755 homeruns, Selig said that he and Aaron had been close friends for nearly 50 years but as a commissioner he did not think of these things. He reiterated that Bonds achievement would be celebrated the same way every important milestone is celebrated by the MLB.
There has been a lot of speculation that Selig would like Bonds to retire now to avoid further inspection. A federal grand jury is investigating whether Bonds perjured himself when he testified in 2003 in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroid case that he had not knowingly taken any performance enhancing drugs. In addition, Bonds who is 42 years old, has still not resolved his one year contract with the Giants.
Bonds will be starting his 22nd season in MLB and he is just 22 homeruns short of breaking Hank Aaron’s record.
