Seattle Mariners
By Michael Williams (8/23/2006)
Even though the Seattle Mariners are in dead last
place in the American League West division, they still have a very good chance
of making the play offs. The AL West is the most balanced division in baseball
and this shows in the Mariners quest for first place. They are in last place but
only five games back from the division leading A’s.
The pitching rotation for the Mariners has been quite inconsistent through the
first half of the season. It is safe to say that if they would have been more
consistent that the Mariners may be closer to the front of the pack than what
they are. The other teams in the division should be worried because the Mariners
are only a few close games away from being in the lead.
Even though the Mariners improved on their hitting woes late in the first half
of the season, they are still not up to par. At this time they lead the American
League in shut outs with ten. In other words there were ten games where they
never even scored a run. If they do not improve on this they will not be able to
make a run at first place and a play off spot.
Overall, the Mariners have a shot at the play offs if they can sure up their
starting rotation and start to produce more runs. But on their way they are
going to have to contend with three over divisional foes that are also lobbying
for the top spot. It should be interesting race down the stretch.
