Seahawks Reach A Deal With Patrick Kerney
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
The Seattle Seahawks have just agreed to a six year contract with Patrick Kerney and this means that the Seahawks are looking to add depth and strengthen their pass rush.
Richard Rosa, Kerney’s agent, informed that Kerney had agreed to the six year contract which is worth $39.5 million and includes $19.5 million guaranteed money.
Kerney has spent his entire football career with Atlanta Falcons. Last season, Kerney played just 9 games because of an injury and he voided the last two years of his contract in February. By doing this, he became a free agent.
Kerney is just 30 years old and he has 58 sacks to his credit which ranks him as on the Falcons’ career list. Prior to injuring himself, Kerney had made 105 consecutive starts. Kerney tore his right pectoral muscle in 2006 in the ninth game. The injury may have been instrumental in reminding Kerney that it might be his last chance to get a big contract. Kerney was a first round pick out of Virginia in the 1999 draft.
According to Rosa, Kerney had a choice between Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks and making the final decision was an extremely difficult one for him. Kerney ultimately chose the Seahawks because he felt he had a better chance of winning a championship with the Seahawks.
Earlier there were concerns about Kerney being too light to become an effective run stopper. He is 6 foot 5 and weighed 273 pounds. However, now Kerney has increased his weight so that should not be an issue any longer.
