San Diego Chargers Feel Wade Phillips' Loss
By Michael Williams (3/26/2007)
Marty Schottenheimer, head coach of San Diego Chargers, is busy looking for more people to fill the vacancies on his coaching staff. Wade Phillip, Chargers’ defensive coordinator, left the Chargers to join as the head coach at Dallas Cowboys. Phillips is the third person among his staff to have left for other clubs this season. Earlier, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron joined as Miami’s head coach and Marty’s two other assistants had also left for better options.
Schottheimer has very high regards for his assistants. He said that they have contributed tremendously and worked in the best interests of the team. He further added that his two coordinators deserved success. He reiterated that indeed it was a big loss to the team and to him personally since they were one of the best in their jobs. He particularly praised Phillips in the way he had infused life into the Chargers and made them one of the best teams in the NFL this season, particularly in the defense.
Chargers’ general manager A. J Smith said that he was expecting Phillips to get good job offers, but it was really a surprise to have both the coordinators leave the team at around the same time. This situation immediately was seen affecting the performance of the team. They lost their match with New England Patriots 24-21.
Even the players, including outside linebacker Shaun Phillips, were upset that Phillips had left and they acknowledged his contribution. Shaun Phillips said that he would not personally be comfortable under any other defense coordinator but he had no choice but to get used to having a new one.
It will be a tough job for Schottheimer to appoint somebody who can match the standards set up by Wade, both, at personal and professional level. Chargers have promoted running backs coach Clarence Shelmon as the offensive coordinator. They have also hired Clancy Barone as tight ends coach and Matt Simon as running backs coach.
