Sacramento Kings Need A Guiding Hand
By Michael Williams (3/8/2007)
This year, Sacramento Kings had a very ordinary season. They were far away from competing with the best on the field. The Kings have lacunae that need to be repaired so that they can compete with the best in basketball, who are the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns. Any team can become the best if it can perform in crunch situations. The team that wins matches in the regular season as well as in the play-offs is bound to be the ultimate winner. But, what exactly is needed to become the best? Let us compare the current 5 best teams.
Dallas Mavericks: Avery Johnson, the coach for the Dallas team, has been successful in completely changing the outlook of the team. He has managed to make a team that is well balanced and he has also provided them with confidence to become a team that can score and ended them making the Mavericks into a real threat. Its line up includes All Star power forward Dirk Nowitzi, point guard Jason Terry and small forward Josh Howard. The three are the leading scorers.
Phoenix Suns: The Suns Steve Nash in their line-up Steve Nash, who is an All Star point guard and two time MVP. The other top scorers are power forward Shawn Marion and center Amare Stoudemirer. Half of team’s scoring revolves around these three. While Nash is critical for points, Marion leads the team in rebounds, steals and blocks. Coached by Mike D’Antoni, Nash-led Phoenix Suns is all about scoring.
Apart from these two leaders, San Antonio Spurs have Tim Duncan-the power forward, Tony Parker-point guard and shooting guard Manu Ginobili who do the bulk of scoring for the team. This team also has a very strong defense.
All the leading teams including Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz have one or more than one star performers who lead the team and the other members revolve around them providing a strong support. These teams manage to win with a collective performance. For all these teams, the bulk of the scoring is done by the starters and is followed up strongly by the bench.
The main aspect the Kings’ lack is a star performer who can lead the team from the front. The Kings’ rely on their bench for bulk of their scoring. They need a strong coach who can infuse confidence into the players. This team has the talent to become the leader but needs somebody to show them the right path.
