Roger Clemens Neither Retired Nor Active
By Michael Williams (3/8/2007)
44 year old Roger Clemens is not enjoying his so called retirement at all. He was the keynote speaker at the St John’s winter banquet where he mentioned that he is not sure whether he wants to retire or return to baseball.
Should Clemens decide to return to baseball, it would be his 24th major league season. There is very possibility that Clemens will return to pitching and when he does he will choose between three teams. He might return to play for Houston Astros, New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox.
Just a couple of days before the banquet, Clemens gave the minor leaguers of Houston Astros some batting practice. He pitched for 45 minutes for two consecutive days. Though Clemens said that he would have rather had a glass of wine than pitched a ball.
Last year in 2006, Clemens did not start his major league season till end of June. This was because he had a poor run support. In 19 starts, he was 7-6 with a 2.30 ERA. This season he might start a few weeks early but it all depends on which team he elects to play with. Clemens said that none of the teams are interested in him till May 2007 while he is not conducive to playing, at the moment, in May.
Clemens already has many achievements and awards to his name. He has 348 wins to his name along with seven Cy Young Awards, one MVP, eleven All Star selections and two World Series titles. Clemens does not have to prove anything to anyone, least of all himself. He wants to return to baseball, because he enjoys playing the game and winning.
Clemens spent the last three seasons with the Astros and prior to that he played for five seasons with the Yankees. Clemens will be meeting some of his former teammates from the Yankees soon and he hopes that they will advocate and insist on his return to the team.
