Revenge Games
By Kris Lazaro (8/15/2006)
Teams seeking same season revenge usually cover
their games when the team seeking revenge is at home. Although the spread is
usually shaded against them, these teams cover nonetheless. In the National
Football League, where rarely do teams face each more than once, this angle does
not fully work. In the National Basketball Association and Major League
Baseball, this angle works the best. In the college sports of NCAAF and NCAAB,
teams who got humiliated in the past year usually exact vengeance on their
opponent the following year (especially if the team seeking revenge is at home).
One instance in the NFL where a team does very well in revenge games is seen in
Bill
Belichick’s New England Patriots. Belichick is a very proud coach and is almost
flawless in same season revenge games. He is a mastermind and exposes the
weaknesses of other teams and exploits them rather easily.
In the NBA, division rivals meet 4 times a year. Teams who have lost 3 straight
usually do not lose the 4th game. These teams have too much pride on the line
and will not usually be swept by the team that beat them 3 times prior in the
year. Some factors that make this triple-revenge angle stronger include: If the
team seeking revenge is at home, if the team seeking revenge is on a winning
streak, and if the team seeking revenge is vying for playoff position.
In the MLB, if a division rival is matched up with a rival team in a 4 game
series and one team has lost the first 3 games, the 4th game usually goes to the
other team. This angle also works strongest if the team seeking triple-revenge
is at home. Pitching matchups do not usually matter in these types of
situations, thus, betting on a team to avoid a sweep at +money is a very good
bet.
College sports, both in the NCAAF and NCAAB, afford great drama and suspense.
Teams who get humiliated in one year, usually return the favor in the following
year. Since these players more so play for school pride, and not necessarily for
money, these intense matchups usually are very entertaining and drama-filled. If
the team seeking revenge is at home, this angle becomes that much better. Not
only do we have the team seeking revenge comfortably at home, we also have the
home crowd jeering at the opposing visiting team. Likewise, college teams do not
usually bode well on the road.
In summary, go for teams seeking same season revenge in the professional sports,
and in college, look at what the previous years have revealed to determine one’s
bets.
