Playing On Holidays
By Kris Lazaro (5/4/2007)
Sports never take holidays. There will always be games, may it be a random day in July or on Christmas day. As a sports bettor, then, one should realize the strain that this puts on the athletes. The author has found that home teams during holiday games do not perform as well as their visiting counterparts.
This theory can be explained by the fact that the visitors are generally away from friends and family during the holidays. This may add to total team chemistry, for the only family they do have are their teammates. The hometown athletes have to worry about their family, friends, and other home duties such as getting tickets to the game, et cetera. The worst games to play are those that are scheduled for the afternoon, into the evening. These types of games for the hometown athletes are most brutal.
An interesting thing happened during the 2006-07 NFL season. Of the fourteen scheduled games held on December 24th (Sunday), the home teams went a miserable 3-11 straight up, and 2-12 against the spread. This highlights the fact that the home teams were not focused on that particular Sunday, perhaps because of last minute Christmas shopping. Nonetheless, the home teams were busy with things other than playing and concentrating on football.
In considering bowl season for college football, the general rule of thumb is to bet the favorites before Christmas, and to bet the underdogs afterwards. This idea comes from the fact that most of the mismatches occur earlier on in the bowl season, whereas the better matched games occur later on (and the most exciting and bet upon). The bowl championship games are one of the most bet upon games of the college football season, and as such, the underdog bet carries inherent value.
Playing on a holiday can be tough on some players. Therefore, the astute sports gamblers will have the data that shows exactly which teams play poorly during holidays and those teams that play well during the holidays (in general, the veteran teams are those that play better during the holidays).
In closing, there are many factors to consider when teams play during the holidays.
