Playing More Important For Buehrle And Dye Than Money
By Michael Williams (3/19/2007)
Those who know Mark Buehrle know about his humble beginnings. Buehrle was a pitcher in Missouri and was part of the Jefferson Community College, which is not considered to be the right place if you are aspiring to join the Major Leagues.
Lucky for young Buehrle, a scout came to the college and started talking to him about his future in the Major Leagues. However, Buehrle thought the scout had mistaken him for his teammate who was considered to be a better rated prospect than Buehrle.
This incident happened nearly ten years ago and if signs are being read correctly then Buehrle would be going through the recruitment process again at the end of the 2007 season. This time Buehrle can be sure that he would not be mistaken for someone else.
White Sox’s Jermaine Dye would be also going through the recruitment process along with Buehrle. Dye is set to become a free agent after the end of the 2007 season.
Both Buehrle and Dye are down to earth players and one wonders whether they would be able to keep focus on the field knowing that they would be attracting huge contracts once they become free agents.
However, people who know Buehrle and Dye think that both would not let the money get to them. Dye’s agent, Bob Bry, who knows Dye for nearly twenty years, said that Dye is not distracted and is playing better than he has ever played before. While Ken Williams, White Sox’s general manager, thinks that both Dye and Buehrle are professionals and money is not the most important criteria for them.
Free agency is big think in baseball and we will wait and see how Buehrle and Dye react once big money starts pouring in. Until then, let us hope that the thought of big money does not distract them from their play.
