PGA Tour
By Peter Portero (4/6/2006)
The PGA Tour is considered to be a primarily male competition, but has
allowed various qualified females to participate equally with the men. This is
not to say that men are better at golf, but more aimed that the fact that the
LPGA is where most women choose to compete. The PGA Tour itself is completely
independent of the LPGA organization as well as being independent from the PGA
of America.
Three women have qualified and competed along side the men on the PGA tour.
These women, Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley, and Michelle Wie all failed to make
the cut to the next round but Wie came as close as one stroke from making it in
2004. You can expect that there will be plenty of women making their presence
known at the tour and eventually one may even win it.
The PGA Tour has been pushing its fund-raising totals in the current years to
top the previous year's tally during the season to benefit charities in and
around the cities where the tournament events take place. The tour, which is
televised each year, is considered to be the Super Bowl equivalent to the
golfing community and it an event that is watched by millions around the world.
This year will be one to watch as the talent and competition gain momentum.
