Passing the Babe: Barry Bonds
By Michael Williams (7/26/2006)
On May 28, 2006 Barry Bonds finally overtook Babe
Ruth for second place on the all time home runs career list. The only person
that he has left to beat is Hank Aaron who sits atop the list with a career
total of 755. On this day, Bonds hit a home run over the centerfield fence off
of pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim of the Colorado Rockies. This happened in the bottom
of the fourth inning on a 3-2 pitch with one man on base.
The blast that passed Ruth was a big one. The home run traveled an estimated 445
feet, and sailed through the hands of several fans. The ball then landed on a
platform in center field, but rolled off and was caught by a fan that was
standing in a concession stand line. Talk about luck coming from above!
When Bonds hit this home run, it is widely known that it was not heard on the
radio because the microphone of the play by play announcer seemed to give out at
that very moment. Fortunately, the game was on television as well and the
broadcast was not affected in any way. Even though the Giants lost the game,
Bonds got what he had been chasing.
