Oakland Athletics
By Michael Williams (8/24/2006)
The Oakland Athletics are leading the American
League West division at this time, but they should not feel safe. In fact, they
should be down right worried about their position at the top. Sure, it is always
nice to be leading the division especially during the second half of the season,
but when you have so many teams hot on your heels there is never any time to
rest. The Athletics are currently in first place, but the remaining three teams
in the division are all within five games of them. This means that any drop off
could lead to huge problems and a lost play off spot.
If the Athletics are to continue their strong play it is important that the
pitching staff continues to grow. They are led by ace Barry Zito as well as
Danny Harren. The starters have been impressive for the most part, but a lot of
injuries have hampered the bull pen which has cost the team some wins.
With the trade deadline closing in, the Athletics should be looking for bull pen
help. If they can get this they may be able to win a few of the close games that
they let slip away during the fist half. This is crucial to their play off
chances.
The Athletics do not have time to stop and look back now. Even the smallest of
losing streaks may bump them from first place all the way back to last. And if
this happens they can kiss their play off bid good bye.
