NFL To Stage International Games
By Michael Williams (2/9/2007)
NFL will stage two international regular season games per season beginning from 2007. This goes to show that NFL is set compete in the international global sports arena and is committed to developing the games beyond the shores of the US.
This decision was agreed upon in meeting held at New Orleans amongst the NFL club owners who approved the resolution to allow NFL league office to arrange up to two regular season games per season outside the US starting in 2007 and continuing this through 2011.
NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, feels this is the correct step taking into consideration the growing interest in NFL around the world. Goodell also mentioned that the NFL club owners feel that hosting regular season games outside the United States regularly would help build awareness of NFL, increase the fan base and grow the sports worldwide.
In 2005, NFL staged its first ever regular season game outside the United States when Arizona Cardinals hosted the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City. 103,467 people attended the game at Azteca Stadium which is the largest crowd ever in the history of NFL for a regular season game.
It is a known fact that NFL has been active internationally for nearly 20 years through the preseason American Bowl series, NFL Europe League, grass root programs and television program which are customized.
