New York Yankees
By Michael Williams (8/24/2006)
As per par usual, the New York Yankees are right
at the top of the American League East division standings. It is safe to say
that with the type of money that the Yankees have that they will always be play
off contenders. But it also appears that they will no longer stroll through the
regular season without competition from any of their division rivals. At this
time the Yankees are a half a game out of first place and trail the Boston Red
Sox. This is in addition to the Toronto Blue Jays who are only 3 games out of
first place. If the Yankees want to make the play offs they may have to win the
division because a wild card berth is anything but guaranteed in 2006.
The Yankees have had a good pitching staff for the better part of the season.
Even though Randy Johnson has been pretty well inconsistent, the rest of the
staff has done a great job of picking up the slack. The starting rotation has
been led by Mike Mussina and if the Yankees want to continue their winning ways
he will have to be the ace down the stretch as well.
In addition the Yankees are looking to pick up some bull pen help before the
trade deadline. They are looking strong at Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Roberto
Hernandez as well as some other pitchers. Suring up the bullpen will go a long
way in helping the Yankees make a run at the AL East division title.
