New York Jets Finalize Deal To Acquire Thomas Jones
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
During the first few days of free agency, the New Yorks Jets have managed to finalize the deal for Thomas Jones. They would be acquiring him from the Chicago Bears for a second round pick.
Jones will not just bring stability to the Jets’ running game but would also give them a genuine replacement for Curtis Martin.
Jones said that he had a wonderful time playing with the Bears and making it to the Super Bowl but he was excited to join the Jets.
In order to acquire Jones, Jets gave up a second round draft pick, 37th overall. Jones was Chicago’s second round pick, 63rd overall. Now Jones needs to pass a physical examination and agree to a contract extension before he can play for the Jets.
General manager Mike Tannenbaum said that the team had done a lot of research on the type of person Jones was and they had concluded that he would be just right for the team. Jones will be 29 years old when the season starts and he had rushed for 1,210 yards and 6 touchdowns to help Bears reach the Super Bowl. Getting Jones means that the Jets get the number one running they have been looking for after Martin injured his knee a year ago. Martin is anyway expected to announce his retirement soon.
Jones feels that Martin is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and he was excited to the join the same team as him. He also thinks that the Jets are an exciting team with a lot of good players and Jones was looking forward to helping them win.
