Nets Get Senior Dance Team
By Michael Williams (3/6/2007)
The New Jersey Nets decided to do things a little different during their game against the Detroit Pistons. They took this game as an opportunity to show their new group of dancers. The difference was that the group of dancers was made up of 14 senior citizens ranging from 59 years to 83 years.
This senior citizen dance group is made up of 13 women and one man. They had a one minute routine at the Continental Airlines Arena and managed to bring the crowd to their feet by dancing to the hip-hop tune of Snap Yo Fingers.
The dancers were dressed in white sweat suits with red jerseys over them, wearing a number to match their age. They jogged onto the court between the first and second quarter. The started their dance routine to At The Hop and managed to get the crowd to their feet after they switched to the hip-hop routine.
The group of 14 dancers were selected through a tryout that was held over two months ago. The dancers then practiced their routine for a month before performing for the first time at the Continental Airlines Arena. They are scheduled to perform at five more home games.
For the dancers, it was an exciting and exhilarating moment. Claire Gaines is 61 years old from New York City and she went by the stage name of Blond-e. She said that she always enjoyed dancing but had never danced before in front such a huge audience. While 81 year old Fanny Militar said that she had the most wonderful time of her life. Militar’s granddaughter is part of the Nets Dancers, which is the group that performs regularly at every home game.
