By Michael Williams (2/13/2007)
At the end of December 2006, just before New Year’s Eve, Bobby Murcer underwent a brain surgery to remove a brain tumor. The surgery was performed at a Houston hospital and Murcer spent New Year’s Eve in Houston with his family.
After a couple of days, the doctors at the hospital gave Murcer the green signal and he could return home to Oklahoma to complete his recuperation.
Ever since returning home to Oklahoma after the surgery, Murcer, who is 60 years old, has been spending his time relaxing and enjoying everyday activities. Murcer fans would be pleased to note that he has not had any setbacks after the surgery. This information was given by the Yankees.
Murcer was slated to return to Houston in the second week of January to consult the doctors at the University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center. This is one of the topmost cancer facilities in the United States.
Murcer, who is a Yankees broadcaster, had a brain surgery after a tumor was discovered on Christmas Eve following an MRI. He underwent the MRI because he was having headaches and feeling loss of energy.
From 1965 to 1983, Murcer played 17 seasons in major leagues. He was a five time All Star and a Gold Glove winning outfielder. He batted .277 and had 252 home runs and 1,043 RBIs with the Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
After he retired, Murcer became a broadcaster for the Yankees and he won three Emmy Awards for live sports coverage.
