Michael Vicks Donates Money To Firefighter’s Family and Single Moms
By Michael Williams (2/9/2007)
Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Michael Vick is giving $5,000 to the family of a firefighter who died in the line of duty. He is also donating another $5,000 to The Warrick Dunn Foundation that helps single mothers become homeowners. This is part of the fine for an obscene gesture Vick made to the fans.
Steve Solomon, an Atlanta firefighter, died in November 2006 due to injuries sustained while battling a Thanksgiving night fire.
In a statement Vick mentioned that he had given this a lot of thought and when he had heard that Steve Solomon had died fighting a fire on Thanksgiving while most people were at home with their families, he was touched by it and his heart went out to the family.
Vick also mentioned that he wanted to help the foundation run by Warrick Dunn, Atlanta Falcons running back. This foundation helps single mothers and their children with down payments on homes and home furnishings.
The $5,000 to the Solomon family will be made through the Golden Shield Foundation. This organization helps the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who have been killed or wounded in the line of duty.
Vick had made obscene gestures with both his hands when he was walking off the Georgia Dome field. The Atlanta Falcons had lost that game to New Orleans Saints, prompting booing from the fans. Vick mentioned that he had gestured after he heard a disturbing insult from a male fan.
Vick was fined $10,000 by NFL and further ordered to donate another $10,000 to a worthy cause.
