Michael Vick Will Call Plays For The Falcons
By Michael Williams (3/8/2007)
Atlanta Falcons coach, Bobby Petrino, has decided to something different than his predecessor. He has decided that he will allow Michael Vick to a more active role when it comes to running the offense, including making call audibles.
While Jim Mora was the coach of the Falcons, Vick has to go along with whatever play was called by Greg Knapp, the offensive coordinator. This was even true when Vick got to the line and looked at the defense alignment knowing that the call was not good enough. The only thing that Vick could do during Mora era was changing the protection plan and calling which side of the field to run the play.
Hopefully now things would be different with Petrino as the head coach. Petrino was got from Louisville after Mora was fired.
In a news conference in Miami, Petrino said that the information was already given to Vick and it was something new to him, nonetheless he was very excited about it. He further added that Vick believed that he was capable of delivering.
Mora was fired after the Falcons failed to make it to the playoff for the second consecutive season and ended with 7-9. In 2004 season, the Falcons reached the NFC championship game but had a disastrous showing in the second half in the last two seasons.
Arthur Blank, Falcons’ owner, urged Petrino to come to Miami because he thought it would be a nice opportunity for the new coach to get to know the pros after spending nearly all his career with college players.
Petrino said that he was positive that Vick would become a better quarterback in the coming season. Last season, Vick became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards but was at the bottom of NFL’s passer ratings. This could be because the Falcons were unable to Vick the protection he required when he dropped back to pass.
Petrino knows that he would have to change the philosophy of the offensive line before he and the Falcons can get the desired results.
