Michael Vick In Trouble At Miami Airport Over Water Bottle
By Michael Williams (2/14/2007)
Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback, Michael Vick has a penchant for trouble. Once again he was making headlines but not for his football skills.
Vick was asked to give up a water bottle to the security at Miami International Airport, which he did so reluctantly. The water bottle smelled like marijuana and had some substance hidden in a secret compartment. However, Vick was not arrested and was allowed to board his flight to Atlanta.
Miami police in the meantime informed that it could be weeks before they made a decision to file charges against Vick.
Michael Vick is a three time Pro Bowl player who became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards.
Arthur Blank, Falcons owner, Rich McKay, general manager, and Bobby Petrino, coach, met Vick to ascertain facts. Blank was described as being upset with Vick who signed a $137 million contract three years ago. At that point it was the richest contract in NFL.
As per the laws prevailing in Florida, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana is considered a misdemeanor which is punishable by up to one year in prison along with a fine of $1,000. Invariably first time offenders do not do any time in jail. The police still have to analyze the substance to find out what it is.
While NFL’s substance abuse policy states that any team can decide whether a player has to undergo a physical examination with the NFL’s appointed medical director based on the player’s behavior including but not limited to an arrest. NFL, as of now, has not made a decision with regard to Vick.
Vick has already been having problems. A lawsuit was filed by a woman in April 2006 who has claimed that Vick had knowingly given her herpes. Then again in November 2006, Vick made an obscene gesture to Atlanta fans for heckling the team after their 31-13 loss to New Orleans. Vick apologized for the incident and paid a $10,000 team fine and donated $10,000 to charity.
Now, with this latest incident, the Falcons must be worried that this might become a trend with the face of the franchise as that is what Vick is suppose to be.
