FOOTBALL – Bills: McCargo with Foot Injury Ending His Season
By Kris Lazaro (10/26/2006)
The Buffalo Bills placed on injured reserve rookie defensive tackle John McCargo on Saturday because of a broken left foot. This injury will end the season of the rookie.
McCargo was Buffalo's second first-round selection for this season, which is worth noting considering the fact that the team had not less than 26th round this year. The player was injured in the fourth quarter of Buffalo's 40-7 loss against the Chicago Bears last Sunday. The next day, he underwent surgery in order to repair his foot.
The rookie already broke the same foot as he was a junior at North Carolina State last season. Following his injury he was out for five games. This season he had playing in all five games for Buffalo finishing the year with 11 tackles.
The Bills signed defensive tackle Jason Jefferson off their practice squad n order to replace McCargo. Buffalo acquired Jefferson last year when he was released from Philadelphia's practice squad. He already appeared in five games with the Bills last season.
The loss of McCargo makes it more difficult for the Bills, whose defense has been without two starters since the first week of the season. Indeed linebacker Takeo Spikes is temporarily unavailable because of a hamstring injury sustained in Buffalo's season opener against New England. Spikes expects to play on Sunday against Detroit, but he is still listed as questionable on the team's injury list.
In addition, the Bills cut opening-day starting safety Troy Vincent this week after he was on minor injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Starting cornerback Nate Clements was also injured against Chicago. The player is doubtful for Sunday's game with a right quadriceps injury.
