Marlins Plagued With Injuries During Spring Training
By Kris Lazaro (5/8/2007)
Marlins are having a bad Spring Training camp. Some of their promising young pitchers are down with injuries and this is causing a lot of concern in team.
Taylor Tankersley, Marlins reliever, has a an inflammation in his left shoulder and has been put on the no throw status for a week. From the looks of it, Tankersley will not be fit for the Opening Day.
This means that the Marlins might not have their main left handed reliever on the Opening Day and to add to their woes, Josh Johnson, the starter, might be out for an extended period of time. It looks like Johnson has nerve problem in his throwing elbow and is expected to miss a major part of the season. Johnson is expected to be on the disabled list for the Opening Day.
Then there is Anibal Sanchez, who is all set make his debut start in the Grapefruit League. He has be troubled by shin splints in both legs. In addition, Sanchez had an MRI on his shoulder in January. Now of course, Sanchez insists that his shoulder is okay but it is his legs that causing problems.
Tankersley recently had an MRI followed by an examination and it appears that his shoulder does not have any structural damage. He was Marlins’ first round pick in the 2004 draft and in 49 games, he was 2-1 with a 2.85 ERA. He threw a 41 complete innings and managed 3 saves.
While Johnson has been having the elbow problem since September 2006. He finished season with 12-7 and 3.10 ERA. On January 19, 2007, Johnson experience pain in the biceps / triceps area during a throwing session. He underwent an MRI on January 31, 2007 which confirmed no structural damage. Now the pain in Johnson’s arm has migrated to a spot above the elbow.
