Margins Of Victory
By Kris Lazaro (5/4/2007)
In sports, there is nothing more impressive than blowing out another quality team. In terms of sports betting, the sports bettor must be aware that oddsmakers will account for this fact when such a team plays their next game. In the NBA (national basketball association) and the NFL (national football league), teams who blow out another usually fare badly in their next game, either losing the spread or losing the game straight up. Conversely, teams who lose by a big margin bode well in their upcoming game.
An explanation as to why teams do so bad after a blowout can be explained by the fact of complacency. This is especially true in the collegiate realm of sports. College kids become arrogant and are quick to deem themselves the best players in the country. As such, when they play their next game, they do not do and perform so well. Oddsmakers also account for this blowout. The public will usually jump on teams who are successful, as such, teams who blowout another team in national television usually lose arts (against the spread) in their next game. In the NBA, if a team blows out a team by more than 20 points and is then going on the road (or staying on the road), such a team will more than likely get smoked in their next game. If such a team is young, the angle becomes stronger (perhaps based on such a young teams’ maturity level).
Teams who get humiliated usually bounce back quite well. Teams in the NBA do this quite often; when they get smoked one night, they usually return the favor to another team the following night (the angle gets stronger when it is a home and home series—the two teams play a mini two-game series). If a team gets smoked on national television, rest assure that oddsmakers will give them extra points the next time they play basketball.
In conclusion, margins of victory are a great angle to use in predicting future winners. In general, teams who come off a blowout usually do quite badly in their next game, while teams who are the recipient of a blowout usually fair quite well in their next game.
