Long Road Trips
By Kris Lazaro (5/4/2007)
Long road trips for most people are not fun. In the sports world, teams often go on long road trips at some point during the season. It is during these trips that teams often find their identity. As a sports handicapper, though, long road trips provide opportunities to make money. This article will discuss the dynamics of a long road trip and situations where the sports bettor can make some money.
The beginning of a road trip is usually the best time to bet on the road team, especially if they are coming off a bad homestand. Coaches often tell their teams to start off a trip on the right foot, hence, backing teams on the first game of a road trip is usually a good bet across the sports board. If such a team starts streaking, either good or bad, the sports bettor should bet accordingly. A streak is defined as one in which an outcome is repeated a minimum of three times, so for example, if a team starts to win three games in a row, the sports bettor should ride such a team until the wheels pop off. This idea is strongest in baseball.
The end of a road trip can be tricky to analyze. In general, if a road trip is successful (winning more than half of the games), then the last game can be written off by most athletes, although coaches will never admit to it. This is especially true if the road trip is really long. On the flip side, if a road trip is not so successful, then the final game of the road trip is most crucial. Coaches and players do not want to return home off a bad road trip. Hence, teams will often play to their potential (and over it) during the last game of a losing road trip.
The end result of a long road trip is fatigue. The author has seen the negative aspect and toll that such a trip takes on athletes. As such, it is best to go against teams in their first game back home from a long road trip. This can be best explained by the fact that these people have just returned and are now acclimating themselves back into home life once more.
In closing, long road trips provide opportunities to make money, if played wisely.
