Kansas City Chiefs Ask Trent Green To Restructure His Contract
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
Trent Green’s agent, Jim Steiner, informed that the Chiefs have asked Green to restructure his contract. The restructuring will pay Green $7.2 million next season. Green missed 8 games last season after suffering a severe concussion. The Chiefs are also open for offers from other teams for Green. This means that Green could be on his way out of the Chiefs.
Steiner said that he and Green are now in the process of checking out all the options that there for Green and will only decide after that.
Green signed a contract through 2009 and he was set to receive $7.7 million and $9.2 million that the last two years of his contract. In February 2007, the Chiefs signed up Damon Huard on a three year contract. Huard had filled in for Green after he suffered the concussion.
Green is 37 years old and has played in two Pro Bowls. Before he was knocked unconscious, Green made 80 straight starts and was one of the most popular players on the team who directed a strong offense under Dick Vermeil, the Chiefs’ former coach. After Green recovered, Huard was benched and the Chiefs seem to struggle. Green never looked comfortable and he threw 7 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. The Chiefs ended up losing the last five games.
For the moment, the Chiefs are not confirming anything. General manager Carl Peterson has had a meeting with Green and the comment from the Chiefs says that the dialogue with Green continues to be amicable and productive.
