Joey Porter Receives $20 Million In Guaranteed Money From Miami Dolphins
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
By agreeing to a 5 year contract worth $32 million, Joey Porter became the first marquee player to join the Miami Dolphins during the free agent period. As per the contract, Porter will receive a guaranteed $20 million. The contract will be signed by Porter after he passes a physical examination.
Porter played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for his first eight seasons and they released in a salary cap move recently. If he had stayed on with the Steelers, Porter would have received $1 million and would have made another $4 million in the 2007 season, which was his final season with the Steelers as per the contract.
Porter has 60 sacks which ranks him fourth in Steelers’ history and by joining the Dolphins, he is adding more star power to the defense which already has Jason Taylor, the current Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, Taylor was ranked fourth in the yards allowed in the NFL. However, the Dolphins are doing a major overhaul in their roster and were 6-10 last season and they are looking at Porter to add strength to their linebacker position. During his time with the Steelers, Porter averaged more than 60 tackles per year and helped the team win the Super Bowl two seasons ago. Dolphins already have Zach Thomas and Channing Crowder in the linebacker position and the two had a combined 269 tackles in 2006.
The Dolphins have already let go of defensive end Kevin Carter, defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson and offensive lineman Seth McKinney. In addition they have either released or traded 7 players who started at least one game on offense in 2006. All this part of the major roster revamp.
