Jason Richardson's Return Not Helping The Warriors Win
By Kris Lazaro (5/8/2007)
Golden State Warriors’ supporters and fans consider Jason Richardson to be the heart of the team. He is one player who suffers from more remorse after every loss when compared to other Warriors players.
Last season when the Warriors had a disappointing season, it was Richardson who took the initiative and inserted full page advertisements in the local newspapers thanking the fans for their support. This was despite the fact that the Warriors have not reached a playoff last 12 seasons and Richardson even paid for the advertisements himself.
Richardson has returned to the Warriors after a two month long rehabilitation break after breaking a bone in his right hand. However, his return has had no impact on the team to improve its game. The Warriors struggled to beat Memphis and then lost to Clippers and Lakers.
In all the three games, Richardson averaged 17.3 points per game with 7.0 rebounds. The average is good but compared to last season it is down. Last season Richardson averaged 23.2 points per game. However, it is pretty evident that Richardson cannot alone makeup for the absence of injured Baron Davis nor can he help the Warriors to overcome the lack of a real power forward.
At the moment, the Warriors have too many shooting guards and small forwards and coach Don Nelson agrees with it. With Richardson and Stephen Jackson having similar roles and Matt Barnes and Mickael Pietrus doing the same thing, has given the Warriors a skewed roster.
The Golden State Warriors would need find answers to their doubts soon as there is no team competing for the seventh and eighth spot in the Western Conference. The Warriors with 26-31 can still come from the back and make it to the playoffs. But this could also have a negative effect on them by making them complacent like they got in the game against the Lakers.
