Injuries On The Field
Injuries can occur on the baseball field at any time. With pitches coming at hitters at speeds of over one hundred miles per hour, being injured is not unusual. New York Mets baseman Carlos Delgado suffered from such an injury while at bat. The ball hit his right knee. He made it to first base, but was replaced after limping to the base by Julio Franco.
Being hit by a ball may not seem like much, but it’s the speed at which the ball comes in contact with the body that can cause the injury. While not intentional, these injuries can hurt for weeks and make it impossible for a player to run fast or to catch as many balls. These injuries can be permanent in some cases. Batters have the best chance to be injured because the ball is being thrown directly at them. Batters can also tear shoulders and injure their arm muscles from hitting these fast pitches.
Injuries like these are all too common. Trainers checked Delgado’s knee to make sure he was not seriously injured and then decided to replace him. He is expected to make a full recovery. Being injured by the ball can leave a person sitting on the bench for the rest of the game. This is frustrating for players and for coaches especially if the player is a good one. But it is better to rest an injury than try to play the rest of the game. The injury should heal itself quickly so that the person can get back out onto the field.
