How to Pick a Baseball Underdog
By Michael Williams (2/19/2007)
Baseball is a great sport to bet on because any team has a likely chance to win on any given day. You can not say that about basketball where you expect a team like the Atlanta Hawks to lose whenever it plays the San Antonio Spurs.
Because of this, we make our living by betting on underdogs in baseball. First, you must understand why a team is an underdog. Is it because they are a bad team or because their pitcher is horrible. Or because the opponent has a great pitcher.
I have seen great pitchers command heavy chalk only to lose to a great team with a great bullpen. List out the teams that have the best bullpens and make sure you look for them in situations where they are playing on a roll.
We like to find teams that are playing well because baseball teams with momentum and those that are on a roll will undoubtedly carry their good fortunes onto their next game.
A team is also an underdog because of a disadvantage with respect to their starting pitcher. So if your teams have one of the top bullpens in baseball, you will generally eek out important wins in close ballgames.
Some favorites are in slumps. Find the teams that are in slumps and be sure to bet against them.
