Heading into All-Star Breaks
By Kris Lazaro (2/26/2007)
Professional athletes are just like everybody else. They have feelings, emotions, and let-downs. In professional sports the midway point of along season is usually marked by an All-Star type break. This break gives much needed rest for the players—for those fortunate enough to participate in the actual All-Star game, the game itself is basically a “fun and entertaining” exhibition match up.
As sports handicappers, it is our mission to isolate teams in either very desperate or very disinterested situations. Teams who have a lot of All-Star players on the roster may also not try as hard, for they would want to rest up for the long weekend. Interested teams are usually those that want to end the first half on a good note (particularly, those teams with a recent loosing streak). Disinterested teams are more or less more lethargic than the more motivated ones. These teams are dead tired from the long season and may simply want to rest for the remainder of the season.
There is of course an inherent danger in betting these types of games. For example, teams may not necessarily be “too up” and give their maximum effort (since vacation time is right around the corner). Nevertheless, to the season sports handicapper, such situations are ripe for the pickings. Some hints to the sports gambler: look for teams who want to end on a good note; look for teams who are motivated (seeking greater than double revenge, etc.) Lastly, the author highly suggests reading the local papers and get a feeling as to how a team is preparing for its last game before the break. Preparation will be key to success.
In closing, there are a lot of factors to consider when betting games leading up to the All-Star break / game. With careful planning and a little luck, one may be able to isolate situations in which one side is highly motivated while its opponent is highly disinterested.
