Grudzielanek Signs for One More Year
The Kanas City Royals will have second baseman Mark Grudzielanek for one more year as he has signed an extension contract. Grudzielanek, who has played for five other teams, agreed to the contract which will pay him an extra four million dollars. His original deal was a contract that ran out in 2007 and was for three million dollars. Grudzielanek can also add an extra 250,000to his paycheck for performance bonuses.
Signing contracts like this one is not uncommon. Players who do not want to be under lengthy contracts will sometimes sign shorter ones and then negotiate extensions for a year or two. This leaves them the option of leaving after the contract is up. As a free agent, Grudzielanek left St. Louis to join Kanas City. When players are free agents this means that they can choose who they want to play for instead of worrying about being under contract or being traded.
A one year contract extension will give Grudzielanek an extra year of security before he will have to move on to another team or retire. It is his decision as to what he would like to do with the rest of his career. Many players retire to coach or to host talk shows or write newspaper columns. There are many opportunities waiting for the right person. After retirement, most players end up back in the game in one form or another. Having extensions on their contracts allows them breathing room and the opportunity to set themselves up with a new career after they retire.
