Football Preseason Success Story
By Peter Portero (6/28/2006)
A very good friend of mine
told me 10 years ago that I would officially be addicted to gambling if I ever
bet on the NFL Preseason.
I scoffed at his remarks and replied back "Never". That all changed once I
realized that betting on NFL Preseason games not only made the games fun but
were easier to win than the normal season.
The Vegas odds for the NFL regular season are strong. It is tough to make great
plays when Vegas gives you very little edge. But with the preseason, the gambler
has the edge so long as you keep in mind some of the important handicapping
angles necessary for winning.
1. Look to bet on new coaches. That's right, new coaches in the NFL have a lot
to prove and they will be more likely to test real plays, and get their starters
more involved. These games mean more to them than say, the previous year's
Superbowl champion.
2. Look for the Quarterback controversies. Every year, there are about 5 teams
heading into the NFL season with some type of a quarterback controversy. These
things do not settle themselves. With the aid of preseason performances, coaches
can make their assessments on the players. Even if the cagey veteran is
guaranteed to start for the team, a promising young quarterback must shine in
preseason.
3. Read the local papers. What are the coaches saying heading into preseason?
Are they focusing on offense, defense? Do they have anything to prove? Generally
speaking, going for teams that have something to prove and looking to focus on
offense is usually the teams you want to bet on.
