Football Players: Basic Intro To Football
By Michael Williams (8/16/2006)
An National Football League (NFL) game is played
by two opposing teams that can place eleven players on the field. When a team is
in possession of the ball they are the offense and defense is for the team that
is defending the goal line. There are also special teams that enter the game at
certain times such as when the ball changes team possession or an extra point is
attempted.
The eleven players that make up the offensive side attempt to move the ball down
the field while working as a team. There are two groups in this team: the
linemen which are seven men on the line of scrimmage and four other players who
take up pre-designated positions either behind the linemen or out to the sides
depending on the play. The player in the middle is called the center, on both
sides is the left and right guard, then beside them is the left and right tackle
and on the ends of the line is the tight end and split end.
The defensive side has a row of linemen that attempt to prevent the offensive
side from scoring. A defensive line can have any number of players but most
teams prefer to place three or four on the line. Behind the line are the
linebackers and there are usually three or four of them who try to stop running
and block receivers. Then there is a secondary line behind the defensive line
which is made up of cornerbacks and safeties, typically there are two
cornerbacks and two safeties on the field at a time.
