Fans Query Coffeys Role At Winter Caravan
By Michael Williams (3/5/2007)
There were lot of queries in the minds of loyal fans of Jerry Narron, manager of the Cincinnati Reds, who was present at the Q&A session at the final Reds Winter Caravan stop at Dayton. With the Caravan, the Reds had officially kicked off their 2007 caravan. This session was held at the Fricker’s restaurant and included some of the players and the fans. Many of the fans wanted to know whether Todd Coffey could fit into the role of a closer.
According to Narron, there are few seasoned players like David Weathers and Mike Stanton for the ninth-innings role. Apart from these, Bill Bray and Coffey might also get an opportunity to try their chances. Eddie Guardado, the regular closer, who is recovering from his elbow injury, might be back in action before midseason.
Todd Coffey, who was also present, spoke to the fans on the occasion. He pledged that he will do whatever had been instructed by Narron and that the team’s interests are more vital that his personal objectives. 26 year old Coffey, who was a former closer for Class A Dayton Dragons, had mixed success while closing for the Cincinnati Reds. He admitted that he had a rough season and promised to learn from his mistakes and deliver a better performance.
Earlier in the winter, Narron had said that Coffey would be used during the seventh and eighth innings. Coffey would be one of the first persons attending the Spring Camp in Sarasota. He is making some changes like using split-fingered fastball that would give him a more dangerous strike-out pitch. Hope this new ball strategy brings cheers to him and to his fans.
