Elijah Dukes In Trouble Again
By Michael Williams (2/13/2007)
Elijah Dukes and trouble seem to be getting synonymous. He just can not seem to stay out of trouble. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ prospect was arrested and charged with marijuana possession after being stopped for traffic violation.
Dukes, who is 22 years old, lives in Brandon. His 2006 Dodge Charger was pulled over in the night because of a loud music violation. On approaching to the car, a police officer smelled marijuana. A search was conducted using a police dog and less than 2 grams of marijuana was found hidden in the car’s center console.
Dukes was driving along with a 23 year old passenger. Both men were arrested. However, they were released after they promised to appear later in court.
The 225 pound, 6 foot 2 inches Dukes is on Devil Rays’ 40 man roster. He was a third round pick in the 2002 draft. Dukes has been known to get into trouble, both, on and off the field.
In 2006, Dukes was suspended for 15 games for disciplinary reasons at Triple-A-Durham. He was suspended once again for 5 games by the International League after he was ejected in a game for constantly arguing over balls and strikes.
Last year, in 2006, Dukes publicly criticized his Tampa Bay organization as well as the conditions at Durham.
After being arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, Devil Rays gave out a statement that they were aware of the seriousness of the incident but did not want to make any comments till the incident remained a pending legal matter.
