Dwyane Wade’s Marquette Jersey To Retire
By Michael Williams (3/8/2007)
Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade is touched by the gesture being accorded to him by Marquette. They are set to retire his jersey and Wade is excited because he feels this is not something that happens to many players. Wade’s jersey would be one of nine retired by Marquette.
When Wade left high school to join Marquette, he was a partial qualifier and he did not play during his freshman year due to academic issues. But he went to represent Marquette for the next two seasons. He ensure that the Golden Eagles reached the 2003 Final Four, which was their first appearance in the semifinal since 1997. In his last year with Marquette, Wade scored 710 points and ended up setting a school record.
Wade is all set for the ceremony which will be held in Milwaukee. During halftime of the game against Providence, the Golden Eagles will hoist Wade’s no. 3 jersey. The same night, the Heats are scheduled to play the Bucks in Milwaukee.
Marquette’s head coach, Tom Crean, was all praises for Dwyane Wade. He said that during his short stay at Marquette, Wade made an impact not just as a basketball player but also as good human being. He further added that the team was better because of the contribution made by Wade.
Other players from Marquette who had their jerseys retired are Dean Meminger, Butch Lee, Maurice Lucas, George Thompson, Bo Ellis, Doc Rivers, Earl Tatum and Don Kojis. Marquette also retire jersey number 11 in honor of the Apollo 11 crew, jersey number 38 for the years Robert Weingart worked as athletic director and jersey number 77 for coach Al McGuire who led the school to the national championship in 1977.
