Dukes Enter ACC Tournament Without Losing A Single Game
By Kris Lazaro (5/8/2007)
The Blue Devils are having an easy season and have entered the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament without losing a single game. The Blue Devils has are 29-0 games this season and have created a league history by not losing a single game in the regular season. They are also aware that the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference teams are dying to hand them their first loss.
Blue Devils’ coach Gail Goestenkors knows that her team had a good season and for the moment the Dukes are just concentrating on winning three games. Goestenkors said that the Blue Devils did not win the tournament last year, so they want go out and win every game they play.
The Blue Devils are leading the ACC class with three top 10 teams. They join North Carolina, who are poised at 27-3, and Maryland, who are at 26-4. North Carolina have been spectacular at the close of the regular season when they won 8 of the 9 games and this could be attributed to the midseason return of coach Kay Yow, who was fighting cancer. They were ranked 24 in the national rankings and are seeded at no. 4.
All four ranked teams have been given a first round bye and this means that they get an extra day’s rest before playing the quarterfinals.
Last year North Carolina won the ACC tournament by defeating Maryland 91-80. This was also seen as a revenge since North Carolina lost just one game in the regular season and that loss was to Maryland.
Maryland had defeated the Blue Devils in the last season’s national title game and this means that the expectation from Maryland is even higher this year.
