Dolphins Search For Head Coach Continues
By Michael Williams (2/9/2007)
New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coach position for Miami Dolphins.
The former Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora had a second round of interviews with the Dolphins. The only other candidate to have had a second talk is Chan Gailey, Georgia Tech coach.
In the first round of interviews that finished on January 10, Dolphins met 12 coaches.
Schottenheimer has not given any reason as to why he pulled out of consideration. He is the son of Marty Schottenheimer whose team San Diego Chargers were eliminated from the playoffs by New England. Should Marty Schottenheimer’s lose his job, then Dolphins might pursue him.
At 33 years of age, Brian Schottenheimer was the youngest candidate for the Dolphins head coach position. He has been an NFL assistant for the last eight seasons.
The New York Jets made the playoffs this season and their offense and quarterback Chad Pennington has shown improvement even though it is Schottenheimer’s first year with the team. Jets’ head coach, Eric Mangini informed through a statement that it was Schottenheimer’s creative approach to offense that was integral part of the team’s progress and he is pleased that Schottenheimer has decided to stay on with the Jets.
Ken Whisenhunt, former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator was interviewed earlier by the Dolphins but he has now become Arizona’s head coach. Chicago Bears assistants Ron Rivera and Ron Turner were also interviewed but are unavailable for further talks as their team is still in the playoffs.
